Entry-Level Railroad Bridge Engineer

Fair Dermody Consulting Engineers is seeking an entry-level Railroad Bridge Engineer to join our growing civil/structural engineering firm. Located in Portland, Maine, FDCE is an industry leader in railroad structural engineering. Requirements of the Entry-Level Railroad Bridge Engineer:

  • BS in Civil Engineering with a structural engineering emphasis from an ABET/EAC-accredited program

  • E.I. or E.I.T. certification

  • 0-4 years of structural engineering experience

  • Passion for bridge engineering

  • Coursework in steel and reinforced concrete design (bridge design course a plus)

  • Experience with Microsoft Office and AutoCAD (MathCAD a plus)

  • Familiarity with structural engineering software (RISA preferred)

  • Excellent problem solving and time management skills

  • Strong attention to detail

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills to interact effectively with coworkers, clients, contractors, agencies, and the public

  • A commitment to professional development

  • Must be willing to relocate or commute to our office in Portland, Maine.

  • Must be willing to travel to project/work sites as necessary (less than 15% of time expected). Work is primarily in the Eastern US, and overnight travel will be required.

  • Physical requirements include the ability to lift and carry objects weighing up to 25 pounds; ability to work at heights; ability to navigate into confined spaces as necessary.

Responsibilities of the Entry-Level Railroad Bridge Engineer:

  • Perform design calculations and load ratings for steel, concrete, and timber railroad structures

  • Assist with railroad bridge inspections, including rope access inspections (if desired)

  • Interpret existing bridge plans dating up to 125 years old and become familiar with various types of railroad structures

  • Draft existing and proposed conditions for railroad bridge rehabilitation projects using AutoCAD

  • Perform jacking/temporary support calculations for bridge construction and rehabilitation projects

  • Design and draft railroad bridge deck replacement plans

  • Assist with engineer estimates and technical specification writing

  • Actively participate in professional organizations
